Eric Schneiderman made it official, releasing his resignation letter on Tuesday — marking the end to what was until this week a promising political career.
The now-disgraced ex-Attorney General has been accused of sexual battery and assault by multiple women, two of whom detailed the alleged abuse in a New Yorker piece published Monday night.
“I hereby resign the Office of the Attorney General effective at 5 p.m. today,” Schneiderman wrote in the letter. “At that time, Solicitor General Barbara D. Underwood will become acting Attorney General pursuant to a designation letter filed with the Secretary of State.”
Schneiderman, 63, is accused of choking and slapping at least four women without their permission during sex. He has denied any wrongdoing — claiming he was “engaged in role-playing and other consensual sexual activity.”
“I have not assaulted anyone,” he said in a statement to the New Yorker. “I have never engaged in nonconsensual sex, which is a line I would not cross.”
NYPD officials are weighing whether to charge the former top law officer following calls from Mayor de Blasio and others to do so.
