As the Department of Education plans to close or merge eight more failing Renewal schools, it’s a wonder how this one managed to avoid that fate.

New Explorers HS is one of five Renewal schools that failed to meet any of their targets for the past school year — scoring the worst of the bunch.

The South Bronx school was slapped with a “decline” grade for all four of its “leading indicators,” including progress toward graduation by sophomores and juniors, which dropped more than 6 percentage points, and attendance, which dipped nearly 2 points.

New Explorers also posted declines in its “student achievement benchmarks” of graduation rate and number of kids on track to earn Regents diplomas.

In the category of college readiness, the DOE awarded the school a grade of “flat,” although the rate plunged from 9.6 percent in 2014-15 to 5.5 percent.

In addition, the DOE noted the “minimal attendance of parents to school events and conferences.”

The school attempted several initiatives to increase parental involvement, including a parent leader meeting and several informal breakfasts.
