School snack-to-basics
No Snickers for you!
In an overhaul of the snacks sold to kids in city public schools, candy is out. Sensible Foods roasted edamame is in.
Only low-fat, low-salt, whole-grain snacks are now being sold in some 700 vending machines in middle and high schools — and kids are biting.
The No. 1 best seller so far: a fresh pineapple spear on a push-up stick, said Tom Murn, president of Answer Vending Inc., which stocks the machines.
“It shocked me — I just thought they wouldn’t buy it,” Murn said.
But kids have turned thumbs down on Glenny’s brown-rice marshmallow treats and soy crisps, he said. Popular snacks include Stacy’s cinnamon pita chips and Kashi’s Cherry Dark Chocolate granola bar.
