Sen. Charles Schumer on Sunday called for federal authorities to fast-track the installation of chemical detectors that pick up traces of the volatile and easily manufactured explosive TATP — which has been used in Europe’s recent terror attacks — so as to safeguard New York’s airports and train stations.
The sensors, which were developed at the University of Rhode Island, are scheduled for installation in airports in Georgia and Atlantic City later this year–but Schumer wants New York City, which he considers a “top terror target,” to be part of the testing pool.
“The stakes are just too high,” the senator said. “Our airports, train stations and more could be made even safer with this kind of detector and that is why we must do all we can to get this technology out the door and into our transportation hubs.”
The simple yet deadly bomb is “as easy to mix as baking a cake,” the New York Democrat quipped Sunday as he held up a box of cake mix. “It’s that plain and simple.”
