Mayhem erupted in Staten Island Mall Sunday afternoon after a report of an active shooter — which has since been deemed false — sent shoppers running and screaming.
“I was walking through the mall to get my eyebrows done when someone screams, ‘He’s coming. Get down. Shooter!’” Loriann Butler told the Post less than an hour after hiding inside Macy’s. “There was a lot of chaos and screaming. I ran to the nearest store I could find and hid in the stockroom with the employees. There were hundreds of us using emergency exits. It was traumatizing.”
Someone called 911 to report an active shooter at the location, and the mall was temporarily locked down around 2:40 p.m., an FDNY spokeswoman said
Police confirmed there were no shots fired inside the Staten Island Mall — no weapon was fired and no gun was recovered inside the building, located at 2655 Richmond Ave. in Heartland Village, authorities said.
Police could not specify what prompted a dispute that led to one individual being arrested at the scene and the other being hospitalized.
“We heard screaming and people ran out of the mall in a stampede,” recalled Christina Piori, 20 who was shopping at New York & Company at the time. “We didn’t hear gunshots, but we were too scared to find out.”
One person was taken to Staten Island University Hospital in an unknown condition following the fight. It was not immediately clear how the victim sustained the injuries.
“There was an isolated incident inside a store between individuals who knew each other. Our security and the NYPD were on site to quickly handle the situation. We’d like to clarify that the Staten Island Mall did not close and there was not any danger to our guests,” Staten Island Mall senior general manager James Easley said.
