ALBANY – Gov. Cuomo announced Monday– Martin Luther King Day — that he has nominated a second African American to serve on the Court of Appeals, the state’s highest court.
The nomination of Rowan Wilson, of Port Washington, L.I., was sent to the state Senate before a midnight Sunday deadline, Cuomo’s ofice said.
If Wilson is confirmed by the Senate, he would join Sheila Abdus-Salaam, as the second African American.
It would be the first time two African Americans have served together on the seven-member panel.
Wilson is a partner at Cravath, Swaine & Moore, where he heads the pro-bono division. He has also chaired the Neighborhood Defenders Services in Harlem for 21 years.
“I am both humbled and honored to be nominated by Governor Cuomo to serve as an Associate Judge on the state’s highest court.” Wilson said in a statement.
“My entire career has been dedicated to the pursuit of justice and there is no better place to continue those efforts than on the New York State Court of Appeals.
Wilson received the highest rating from the state Bar Association, Trial Lawyers Association, Academy of Trial Lawyers, Women’s Bar Association, the Women’s Trial Lawyers Caucus, and six county bar associations.
