Some of the Port Authority cops accused of abandoning their posts to hang out in a “break room” were supposed to be part of heightened security details at the time, agency officials said Wednesday.

As The Post reported, at least 44 officers are suspected of ditching their posts — with some even possibly sleeping on the job — after an internal investigation that began in May with a tip from a whistleblower.

The PA said Wednesday that some of the 44 officers in the latest scandal were on special patrol after terrorism incidents, while others were supposed in pairs to enhance their safety while on patrol of the PATH stations between New Jersey and New York.

The officers were illicitly sneaking away usually during the midnight-to-8 a.m. shift, the PA said.

Several officers spent more than six hours of their shift in the break room, the agency said.

One PAPD officer spent more than seven hours AWOL, it said.

Disciplinary cases against the 44 are pending, the PA said, and no officers have yet to settle any charges against them.

“The allegations against these officers are extremely serious and we believe they have let down the public they are sworn to serve. We will seek to take significant action against those officer who violated the public trust,” said Inspector General Michael Nestor.
