At least 21 people were injured — two critically — when a car crashed into the lobby of a Social Security office in South Jersey on Tuesday morning, officials said.
A driver reportedly was trying to park the car — which was carrying three passengers, including two children — when it suddenly slammed into the lobby of the building in Egg Harbor Township, where dozens of people were waiting, at 9:50 a.m., according to police.
Andy Lalasis, whose ribs were bruised, told the Press of Atlantic City that he saw “bodies flying” in the accident.
“It was like a disaster movie … I saw one guy just fall down in front of me,” Lalasis told the outlet, according to a video posted on Twitter.
A female passenger was among those who suffered critical injuries, and the two children in the car were not considered to be in critical condition.
A total of 21 patients were taken to AtlantiCare Hospital — 19 were sent to the hospital’s Atlantic City campus, which is a level 2 trauma center — and two patients were taken to the hospital’s mainland campus in Galloway Township with minor injuries, hospital spokeswoman Jennifer Tornetta said.
Most of the patients have been treated and released and one patient is still being evaluated in the trauma center, Tornetta added.
Police said the crash appeared to be accidental.
A regional spokesperson for the Social Security Administration said the incident is under investigation by the Egg Harbor Township police, and the building will remain closed until further notice.
