She brakes for children
Last summer, Rachel Guzy, a teen camp counselor in Queens, sprang into action when a school-bus driver collapsed and a load of kids were still on the moving vehicle.
In October, she was awarded a New York Post Liberty medal in the Young Heart category for her quick-thinking act of heroism.
Last August, the then-16-year-old, who didn’t even have a learner’s permit, jumped behind the wheel and slammed on the brake to save nine kids after the driver slumped over with a fatal heart attack.
Guzy — who plans to get a learner’s permit this summer — said that nearly a year later, she finds herself more “super-careful.”
“The other day, I was walking on Steinway Street and there was a little boy who was walking across the street to get to his parents,” she said.
“He was about 10 years old and I waited just to make sure he crossed OK.”
Rachel is entering her senior year at William Cullen Bryant HS and plans a career as a cosmetologist.
