A group pushing a controversial paid-sick-days bill will up the ante on City Council Speaker Christine Quinn today by trying to hand her petitions with 50,000 signatures supporting the measure.

Quinn, who so far has not backed the proposal, offers her staff 12 paid sick days a year — more than the bill asks. It calls for nine days a year for companies with 20 or more workers, and five days for businesses with five to 19 employees. Companies with fewer than five workers would be exempt.

The coalition, backed by the Working Families Party, plans to rally outside City Hall and attempt to deliver the boxes of petitions to Quinn. They will carry them in baby strollers to signify parents who cannot take paid days off when their children are sick.

Mayor Bloomberg opposes the bill, which has a veto-proof majority of sponsors.
