The sister of terror suspect Sayfullo Saipov says her ISIS-obsessed brother was “brainwashed” — and she’s confident he’ll “come to his senses.”
Umida Saipova said she spoke to her brother just a day before he allegedly killed eight people on a bike path along the West Side Highway.
“He was in a good mood. It was a usual, good conversation,” she told Radio Free Europe from Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan.
Saipova said she hopes President Trump, who called for her brother to receive the death penalty, ensures he gets “a fair trial” and “more time.”
“We don’t know who has brainwashed him,” she said. “Perhaps he’s become part of some organized group. I don’t know, honestly, how long it will take for his head to get rid of that poison, but I‘m sure he will come to his senses, God willing.”
The sister told Reuters that her family was shocked when Saipov grew a long beard after getting married in 2013.
Saipov’s mother, Mukaddas, said she last saw her son in August in the US, and also insisted the attack came as a “total shock” to the family.
“I was shocked by the news and I have been in hospital [since then] until this afternoon,” she said.
Mukaddas added that she’d never known her son to be especially religious.
“He was kind with all of his friends,” she said.
“No, he was not religious and never visited mosques because he was always busy with studying and then working.”
