It’s on!
Political consultant Basil Smikle will run against Harlem state Sen. Bill Perkins in a Democratic primary this fall – particularly challenging the incumbent’s opposition to charter schools.
“I’m running. I think I’m going to win,” Smikle said today.
Smikle declared his candidacy after longtime friend Larry Blackmon bowed owed out and cleared the field.
Insiders said Blackmon – a deputy city parks commissioner with ties to Mayor Bloomberg – will likely back Smikle’s candidacy.
Smikle said that Perkins on Monday turned on Harlem parents and kids by voting against legislation to lift the cap on charter schools, which will be a major issue in the campaign.
