Smoking will be illegal in city parks and pedestrian plazas and on beaches and boardwalks beginning May 23.

Mayor Bloomberg signed the bill yesterday to sharply curb outdoor cigarette smoke.

“Smoking in parks and beaches not only harms people trying to enjoy these recreational facilities; it also causes a litter problem,” Bloomberg said.
