Bundle up for a scary pre-Halloween howler today — a record-setting nor’easter straight out of Mother Nature’s prewinter bag of tricks.
The storm is expected to hit the city this morning and to pack an all-day soaking rain. Forecasts call for it to mix with snow tonight and dump 1 to 3 inches of the white stuff.
This would be the first significant October snowfall in the city’s history — blowing away the 0.8 inches of Oct. 30, 1925.
“It’s going to be a very powerful storm,” said Accuweather meteorologist John Gresiak. “And we’re expecting gale-force winds for coastal areas, with storm-force winds over the ocean.”
Officials issued a “snow alert” for today, and placed a small army of city agencies and snow-clearing workers at the ready.
Areas to the west and the north can expect to be hit even harder, Gresiak said — with Paterson, NJ, seeing “several inches” and Sussex County, NJ, expecting 6 to 10.
“I’m not ready for it,” Freddy Cavin, 34, of Hawthorne, NJ, admitted while scooping up snow-fighting weapons at the Home Depot in Paterson, NJ. “I didn’t expect to be buying this early.”
