Sources close to Andrew Cuomo are pushing back on reports, which come from multiple sources, that his camp has debated the possibility of Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks — a Republican — joining him as a runningmate.

The sources said there had been early discussions about Brooks — who recently decided against a run for the vacated congressional seat of scandal-scarred Eric “Tickle Me” Massa — as a lieutenant governor candidate to run alongside Cuomo, the current Attorney General and presumptive Democratic gubernatorial nominee.

While Brooks is seen as an attractive candidate — woman, executive experience, upstater, elected by wide margins — on the Republican line, she’s, well, a Republican, making the potential for her as a runningmate to the de facto leader of the Democratic Party a bit head-scratching.

A source close to Cuomo strenuously denied it, dismissing it as “fiction.” The source also notes an important point — that Brooks endorsed Rick Lazio in mid-February.

Cuomo is expected to announce for governor in the coming weeks.
