ALBANY — The state AFL-CIO endorsed Attorney General Andrew Cuomo for governor yesterday despite opposition from the powerful teachers union, which opposes his call for a property-tax cap and a crackdown on state spending.
The endorsement came on a voice vote from 400 delegates, representing some 2½ million union members, gathered in an Albany suburb.
Conspicuously silent were representatives of New York United Teachers, the parent body of the city-based United Federation of Teachers, as well as the Civil Service Employees Association, the large public employee union.
Cuomo issued a statement thanking the AFL-CIO for its endorsement and noting, “While NYSUT declined to endorse based on my positions with respect to a property-tax cap and state spending issues, we will agree to disagree on those issues.”
