The chairman of the state Democratic party today called on scandal-scarred Sen. Hiram Monserrate to resign immediately, saying his conviction in connection with a domestic-abuse case is bringing “disrepute” to the legislature and the party.

“Whether by votes taken in a Chamber or by conduct outside of that Chamber, an elected official’s reputation reflects either positively or negatively on all other elected colleagues of their Party at every level,” chairman Jay Jacobs said in a statement.

“Moreover, that conduct reflects on the reputation of the Party itself. Senator Hiram Monserrate’s recent conviction has brought disrepute to the Senate Chamber, his colleagues and this Party.

“The Senate’s Special Committee of Inquiry has finished its investigation and the conclusion is abundantly clear: Hiram Monserrate must resign from his Senate seat immediately. If Mr. Monserrate chooses to ignore the growing chorus of those who believe he is no longer fit to serve, we call on the Senate to act on his expulsion.”
