ALBANY — Lawmakers celebrated Animal Advocacy Day in the capital, but it was the tenants’ rights groups that turned the State Capitol into a zoo.

Sixty-one protesters pushing for an overhaul of rent laws that expire June 15 were arrested by state police Tuesday for aggressively blocking the state Senate and Assembly entrances, clogging the hallways and disorderly conduct.

Vietnam vet Assembly Sergeant-at-Arms Wayne Jackson, 72, was forcibly pushed and hit by the rabble rousers, sources said. He has worked for the Assembly for 44 years.

Among those apprehended was city Public Advocate Jumaane Williams.

The legislative session ends on June 19.
