A state financial watchdog voted this afternoon to take control of Nassau County’s struggling as county officials aim to close a budget gap.
The Nassau Interim Finance Authority’s 6-0 decision stops the county’s short-term borrowing for operating expenses and could lead to a wage freeze for thousands of county employees, officials said.
Nassau County officials said they will fight the authority’s decision.
County Executive Edward Mangano had lobbied hard to prevent the takeover.
