State weighs ‘training wage’
ALBANY — Gov. Cuomo and state lawmakers are considering a last-minute budget deal that calls for a lower “training wage’’ for young, unskilled workers instead of one mandatory minimum wage, sources said last night.
The plan, backed by business and GOP leaders, would get around major opposition to a proposed single minimum-wage boost from $7.25 to as much as $9 an hour. Instead, the move would allow businesses to pay beginning workers a temporary lesser wage before being obliged to increase it.
Legislative leaders are trying to get a state budget passed this week, ahead of the Passover holiday, for the fiscal year that starts next month.
