ALBANY — State workers are on track to rack up record overtime this year, Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli said Wednesday.

“If overtime continues to rise at this pace, total costs for 2015 would exceed $700 million,” DiNapoli warned.

State workers logged more than 8.2 million overtime hours and collected more than $337 million in OT in the first six months of the year. That’s up $21 million, or 6.86 percent from last year. Total overtime paid out by the state last year came to $661 million.

“State agencies should scrutinize their management practices and see what changes can be made to reduce their reliance on overtime,” DiNapoli recommended.

Three agencies — Corrections, the Disabilities Office and the Office of Mental Health — accounted for 63 percent of the OT spending, DiNapoli said.
