Therese Patricia Okoumou wants a jury, not a judge, to decide whether she should spend as much as 18 months in prison for climbing the Statue of Liberty’s base and forcing an evacuation of Ellis Island over the July 4 holiday.

Normally, a case involving misdemeanor crimes such as trespassing would be decided by a judge. But lawyer Ron Kuby said a jury is a better fit for Okoumou, who climbed Lady Liberty in protest of Trump’s immigration policies.
