Waiters at high-priced steakhouses in Manhattan, New Jersey and Connecticut were stealing credit card information from wealthy customers, authorities said today in announcing the takedown of a major ID theft ring.

Among those arrested were employees of upscale restaurants like Smith & Wollensky, The Capital Grille and Wolfgang Steak, as well as Morton’s in Stamford, Conn., and The Bicycle Club in Englewood Cliffs, NJ

Seven waiters allegedly targeted customers who paid with high-limit credit cards, authorities said.

The scammers are accused of using handheld scanners to copy credit card data and then sending the information to the leaders of the ID theft ring
