A 5-foot crucifix stolen from St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church in The Bronx last week will be returned Monday evening in a procession — from a nearby church whose pastor spotted a man trying to sell it on the street.

“We saw crossing in front of our car a man running with a big cross,’’ said Pastor Antonio Palacios of St. Anselm’s Church. “We were suspicious that it had been stolen.’’

Members of Palacios’ church surrounded the man and yelled at him to drop the cross, he said, adding the man was trying to sell it for $60 and “there were a lot of people shouting at him that it was not right to steal from a church and from God.’’ A parishioner then traded a smaller cross for the big one.

When Palacios told people at the Padua church their beloved cross was found, “They couldn’t believe it. They were very happy we were able to get the cross.”
