VALLEY FALLS, NY — Wildlife officials in this upstate town may ban captive boar hunts as they try to curb a growing feral hog population that can devastate crops and wildlife.

The problem is the hogs are escaping from private hunting ranches, said Gordon Batcheller, head of the state Department of Environmental Conservation’s Bureau of Wildlife.

“Stopping escapes is the biggest and most important issue,” he said.
