It was like “Cast Away” — but in Queens.
A stranded kayaker was rescued by the NYPD on a remote island in Jamaica Bay after flagging down cops with sticks spelling “HELP” and a large fire, police said Friday.
Police got the call just after 11:15 p.m. on Thursday for the missing 36-year-old man who had gone out kayaking in the bay at about 9 a.m. but had yet to return.
The NYPD quickly sent up one of its aviation units to canvass the 39-square-mile body of water when they spotted the signal fire on a small island — known as Ruffle Bar.
The unnamed man also tried to get someone’s attention by spelling out “HELP” with sticks on the beach during his 14 hours marooned on the island.
A video shared by NYPD’s Special Ops shows the man furiously waving his arms at officers before a helicopter lands on the beach.
“A kayaker takes social distancing to the next level,” read a tweet with the video.
The video shows the man pacing the beach near his makeshift sign as the helicopter hovered nearly 300 feet above the island at about 11:50 p.m.
The officers then loaded the man aboard the helicopter and safely flew him back to Floyd Bennett Field before midnight, according to police.
The man didn’t require any medical attention, cops said.
The section known as Jamaica Bay Unit is one of the largest open spaces in the area — which is about equal in size to Manhattan, according to the National Park Service website.
The bay has a number of islands for kayakers and boaters to explore as well as a “labyrinth of waterways, meadowland and two freshwater ponds,” the site says.
