Hardly anyplace in New York is free of potentially deadly stray voltage, with Con Ed crews finding dozens of hot spots around City Hall, Midtown, the Village — and even near utility CEO Kevin Burke’s Upper East Side home.
But while Con Ed is on pace to uncover more stray voltage this year than last, an activist says the discoveries prove the company is working to fix its problems.
Shockers reported on the new Web site strayvoltagenyc.org include two found near City Hall Park. One was a potentially lethal 138-volt surge found in April on a city street light.
In February, crews found a 117-volt surge on a light near Bryant Park. And a 120-volt leak was found in April on a temporary Con Ed service box on West Third Street,
In January, a pedestrian reported being shocked by a 48-volt surge on East End Avenue, near Burke’s home.
Those shockers were among 8,331 discovered by Con Ed crews and reported by the public from Jan. 1 to Sept. 30. That’s 24 fewer than Con Ed discovered in all of 2008.
