Porso Souleymane, 53, suffered a fractured skull and bleeding in the brain following the Tuesday altercation, officials said.

Souleymane was selling purses and other items from his stand near the corner of Third Ave. and East 149th St. when he noticed a man trying to make off with one of the handbags around 5 p.m. Tuesday.

The vendor saw what he was doing and successfully thwarted the attempted theft before telling him to get lost, police said.

The man vowed he would return with some pals — a promise he later made good on.

The suspect returned with four other men, who took turns beating Souleymane, knocking him to the ground and slamming his head on the pavement, police said.

After the beatdown, the men casually walked away from the scene, a video of the incident shows.

Souleymane suffered severe head trauma and was taken to Lincoln Hospital in critical condition.

All of the suspects are believed to be in their 20s. No arrests have been made.
