A picture is worth a thousand words, and great shots of a roach-infested subway train could snag straphangers free 30-day unlimited-ride MetroCards.

Transit activists are sponsoring a contest where riders photograph subways at their best — and worst.

Gene Russianoff of the Straphangers Campaign expects the shots to range from “the sun setting over an elevated line” to “overflowing garbage cans.”
