Suffolk County DA Thomas Spota has announced he will not seek re-election this fall.

Soon after Spota’s announcement Friday, county Police Commissioner Timothy Sini formally declared his candidacy to replace Spota.

Spota, 75, who has held the job since 2002, is reportedly under investigation on allegations he took part in a police coverup involving former Suffolk Police Chief James Burke, who pleaded guilty in February 2016 to federal charges that he beat a man who stole a stash of porn and a sex toy from Burke’s official vehicle.

Spota said he made the choice in order to spend more time with his family because “life is too short” and he has several grandchildren on the way, he said.
