A man threatening to jump from the Manhattan Bridge was rescued by the NYPD.G. N. MillerCops pulled a suicidal man off the Manhattan Bridge Wednesday morning, after he threatened to take the plunge, authorities said.
Police received 911 calls at around 5 a.m., reporting the 22-year-old man – in a T-shirt, red pants and white high-top sneakers – climbed over a safety fence alongside the bridge’s bike lane.
Emergency Service Unit officers described how they kept the man at mid-span talking for about 30 minutes.
“First he was unresponsive, but after a couple minutes, he just turned to me and said, ‘I don’t want to live life anymore,’” said Officer Connor Farrell.
“At that point, I just told him the reason why we were there, which was because we got several 911 calls about him, and each one of those calls came from someone who cared about him, whether it be his family or his friends.”
While they were speaking, other ESU detectives began cutting a hole in the fence.
At first appeared that the man wanted to come in to safety — but he soon changed his mind.
Det. Joseph Dolan then jumped into action, climbed over the fence from the top and grabbed the man as two other cops held him from the bottom, pulling him to safety.
“It feels good,” Dolan said of the rescue. “It’s all teamwork. We all made a big effort. We don’t want to see anyone get hurt.”
