A super PAC announced today that it will spend “six figures” to help state Sen. Adriano Espaillat topple five-decade Harlem Rep. Charles Rangel.

The Campaign for Primary Accountability intervenes in political party primaries to try to defeat entrenched incumbents. Rangel is one of three house of representative incumbents being targeted this primary season.

“Adriano Espaillat is a solid, credible and capable challenger. He will do a good job if elected,” said Curtis Ellis, a spokesman for the super PAC, which legally must operate independently of any campaign.

“Charlie Rangel is a portrait of what’s wrong with long-term incumbents,” he added.
