YONKERS, N.Y. — The evicted tenant blamed for a fire that killed a 39-year-old firefighter has been arraigned on a murder charge.
Rafael Roldan appeared Monday in a Yonkers courtroom packed with about 100 firefighters.
The firefighters stood when City Judge Charles Wood mentioned the name of Firefighter Patrick Joyce. Joyce was killed Friday when a burst of flame forced him out a third-story window. Two other firefighters were seriously injured.
Police said the 33-year-old Roldan set the fire. He was charged with murder, arson and burglary.
Roldan did not yet have a lawyer and no plea was entered. He is due back in court on Wednesday.
Joyce, a 16-year veteran of the Yonkers Fire Department, was married and had two young daughters.
