An accused Queens fiend has been indicted for killing his gal pal’s family dog, authorities said Monday.
Accused canine killer Brando Henriquez tried to claim that Lavonia, a black-and-white Shih Tzu mix, ran away — but her battered remains were discovered days later by the woman’s family following a frantic search for the beloved pet in July.
The dead 2-and-a-half-year-old pup was found shoved in a garbage bag and dumped in a nearby lot.
Lavonia died of blunt force trauma, according to a necropsy, and area surveillance footage allegedly showed Henriquez leaving the house with a “white bag containing a lump” and then running down the block.
A day after authorities believe Lavonia was murdered, Henriquez allegedly left two voicemails for his girlfriend, one saying, “I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” and in the other muttering, “I’m sorry about the dog.”
“The defendant is accused of aggravated cruelty to animals for brutally killing a small helpless dog and heartlessly offering false hope to his girlfriend and family by making them think that the dog had just run away,” Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said in a statement. “For the next four days, she and family members searched the area and put up missing dog posters in the belief that they would find the dog alive, sadly, only to find the dog’s remains where the defendant allegedly disposed of them. Such acts of aggression toward defenseless animals cannot – and will not – be tolerated in Queens County.”
The 23-year-old suspect was arraigned Monday on charges of aggravated cruelty to animals and faces up to two years in prison if convicted.
