A Brooklyn federal grand today indicted an alleged al-Qaeda member already custody in Germany for allegedly providing weapons and other support to the terror network.
The indictment unsealed against Abdeladim El-Kebir, a 30-year-old Moroccan, charges him with conspiring to provide al-Qaeda with personnel, training, explosives and other “lethal substances.” It also alleges he conspired to possess weapons, including a destructive device.
If convicted, he faces life in prison.
El-Kebir was arrested April 29 in Germany with at least two other suspects and charged with plotting to build a shrapnel-laden bomb to attack a bus or other crowded place in Germany in the spring or summer of 2011.
A letter exchange between El-Kebir and senior al-Qaeda member Sheikh Yunis al Mauritania indicated El-Kebir belonged to a group that American security officials last year warned may be plotting attacks in Europe, AP reported in May.
