A Midtown subway station was evacuated during afternoon rush hour today because of a suspicious-looking box on a train, authorities said.
A horde of NYPD cops descended on the station at 53rd Street and Seventh Avenue when what appeared to be an ammunition box was spotted on an uptown train on the B and D line track at about 5 p.m., cops said.
“They made all the passengers get out,” said Mohammed Ali, 62, a clerk in a store in the station.
As police investigated, B, D and E trains bypassed the station.
By 6:10 p.m., cops had identified that the box, which appeared to be of a military style, was empty, authorities said.
A high-ranking cop at the scene said, “Everything is clear but we need to be careful documenting that box because there was a similar incident with a similar box.” He did not elaborate.
Normal train service had resumed by 6:30 p.m.
