Thousands of gallons of fuel were spilled on a New Jersey highway, prompting roads to close and stores to be evacuated, when tractor-trailers crashed on Friday morning, according to township officials and media reports.

Multiple trucks collided around 10 a.m. on Route 9 near Route 520 in Marlboro Township in Monmouth County, according to a series of tweets posted by Marlboro Township.

Township Mayor Jon Hornik told ABC7 approximately 3,000 gallons were spilled in the intersection following the crash. Video footage taken by the news channel shows the massive mess.

The oil spill prompted the closure of Route 9 between Union Hill and Texas roads. Local businesses were also evacuated, according to the social media postings.
