KEARNY, N.J. — A tanker truck that overturned on the right shoulder of the New Jersey Turnpike caught fire and sent billowing clouds of black smoke into the sky that could be seen as far away as New York City.

There was no immediate word on injuries from the fire, which broke out early Wednesday afternoon near milepost 110 in Kearny. State police say an SUV was also involved in the accident, but its driver wasn’t hurt.

Two travel lanes were shuttered in the area, and the fire was extinguished about an hour later.

It wasn’t immediately known how many people were in the truck.

A mattress and a box spring were visible near where the accident occurred. State police say they apparently came off a van that was also traveling in the area, but it’s not clear if the tanker truck or any other vehicle struck the items.

Still smoking in Kearny. That tanker fire is filling the sky with black smoke. #abc7nypic.twitter.com/QIYPDYbtJf
