Tax scheme up in smoke
A city tobacco wholesaler who ran a complex tax-evasion scheme to fleece the state of more than $700,000 was sentenced in Brooklyn Criminal Court yesterday to a year in prison.
Isidro “Tony” Tavarez, general manager of Brooklyn Tobacco Wholesalers, ran his scheme from December 2005 to last month by doctoring wholesale invoices from tobacco sellers, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman’s office said.
