The city will try to reimburse victims of the widespread taxi scam — but only a limited number of riders may get any dough because of potential claim-verification problems, Mayor Bloomberg said yesterday.

“I don’t know how practical it is to get rebates for people, but we’ll certainly try to do that,” Bloomberg said at a press conference.

Last week, the city revealed that 35,558 cabbies – three-quarters of all hacks — have overcharged nearly 2 million passengers by at least $8.3 million over the years.

During rides, the scofflaw cabbies would change the meter rate from the cheaper city rate to the more expensive suburban charge.

Taxi sources said three vendors collect credit-card information from city cabs and keep the data on their servers for only about two days. Then the information goes to a holding server for a limited time, maybe 30 days or longer.

Without receipts and proof that a victim paid by credit card, reimbursement could be difficult, the sources said.
