All New York City yellow taxicabs will have to be equipped with special audio technology that announces each click of the meter, thanks to a new law that’s aimed at helping blind riders.

The technology will also give blind and visually impaired riders step-by-step audio instructions for paying by credit card.

Previously, riders who couldn’t see would have to turn their card over to the driver and trust him or her to enter the tip that they were told.

Cabs must have the new technology in place by May.
