A kindergarten teacher who was rated one of the city’s best educators in 2014 has been slapped with an $1,800 fine for accepting a free laptop from parents, officials said Wednesday.

Dana Kaplan, a teacher at PS 33 Chelsea Prep on Ninth Avenue, was fined by the Conflicts of Interest Board after admitting she accepted an $881 laptop from parents — after telling them she couldn’t communicate after school hours because her home computer was broken.

“I assert that I have used the laptop primarily to support my kindergarten class, including communicating with parents by e-mail. At times, I have used the laptop for personal, non-DOE business,” said Kaplan in a settlement with the ethics monitor.

Regulations forbid city employees from using their position for personal gain.
