New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie wants public-school teachers evaluated yearly — by other teachers in the same district.

Christie, a Republican, outlined his proposal yesterday in a New York speech sponsored by the Brookings Institution, a Washington think tank.

Arguing that teachers should be judged on classroom performance and student test scores, he called on districts to develop evaluation plans based on that framework.

Christie has emerged as a national figure since taking office in 2010, in part because of his harsh criticism of teachers unions.

He maintains that most teachers would prefer a stronger voice in education reform than their union allows.
