The teen accused of shooting a 26-year-old Yonkers police officer in the face was charged with attempted murder in a bedside arraignment at Westchester County Medical Center, officials said Friday.

Frank Valencia, 18, of New Rochelle in Westchester was charged Thursday with first-degree attempted murder and second-degree weapons possession, both felonies.

The injured cop, Kayla Maher, 26, was responding to a noise complaint just after 8 p.m. Monday when Valencia allegedly opened fire with a .40-caliber Glock 23 pistol. A bullet struck Maher, a second-generation Yonkers cop, in the chin. She was released from the hospital Tuesday.

Valencia, who had been granted parole by a Bronx judge just days earlier, was shot in the confrontation and is in serious but stable condition in the hospital, according to a Yonkers police official.

“Defendant Valencia stands accused of perpetrating one of the most heinous of violent acts, the attempted murder of one of our police officers,” Yonkers Police Commissioner Charles Gardner said in a statement.” His alleged actions were an assault on Officer Maher, the Yonkers Police Department, and the community we serve.”

A second defendant, 21-year-old Jerry Reyes, was charged with criminal possession of a weapon Wednesday, police said. Reyes was allegedly sitting in a parked car with Valencia at the time of the incident.
