TIVOLI, NY — A teenager sent text messages seeking help after the canoe he and his grandfather were in overturned on the Hudson River, police say.
The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office says Christopher Hoffman, 73, of Hopewell Junction, and Thomas Mulvaney, 17, of Rhinebeck, were hunting Wednesday evening when their canoe capsized near Tivoli, on the river’s east bank 40 miles south of Albany.
Deputies say Mulvaney was able to text family and friends and alert them that the two men needed help. Recipients of the messages called 911, and police and rescue crews arrived at about 6 p.m.
