Lower East Siders constantly complain about noisy barflies shattering the early-morning quiet.

Good thing they didn’t live there in 1885 — when beer lovers had 346 saloons to choose from, compared to about 47 today, according to a map unearthed by Slate.com. The map was compiled by the pro-temperance Christian Union newspaper, which concluded that the residents were peaceful — because most were German.

“Unlike his Irish and Yankee cousins, [the German] does not make a great noise and hurrah over his cups, and wind up [in] a street brawl,” the paper said.
