Thieves swiped a neighborhood sign in Ozone Park hours after it was unveiled this week, authorities said.
The “Welcome to Ozone Park” sign was installed by community leaders on Monday morning near 149th Avenue and Cross Bay Boulevard — then promptly stolen by Tuesday, the NYPD and Councilman Eric Ulrich said.
In a tweet, Ulrich said police are collecting surveillance footage from the area to track down the suspects.
“Any one who has any information is urged to call the police. @QueensDAKatz has also been contacted. Truly is a shame!” Ulrich wrote.
In an interview with the Queens Eagle, Ulrich said the theft was carried out by a “sicko.”
“It’s probably the most selfish act that I’ve seen in a long time,” he said. “Somebody’s a real sicko.”
“It’s an iconic sign. A welcoming sign. If they have the sign, bring it back and let’s have it reinstalled,” he added.
