Police are investigating an early morning bank robbery in Maspeth where thieves used a backhoe to smash through a wall and enter the building, police sources said.

It’s believed the thieves stole the construction vehicle from a nearby company before using it to break through the glass wall of the Chase Bank on 48th Street near 54th Avenue around 3:15 a.m., sources and witnesses said.

“They drove a bulldozer right through the glass,” said a woman who saw the aftermath as she was heading into work at a nearby restaurant. “There is just glass and debris everywhere. It’s destroyed.

Authorities said it is unclear if the thieves actually made off with any cash. The investigation is ongoing.
