Move over Avengers — these are real heroes.

Three cops wounded in a fiery Brooklyn shoot out with a ex-con armed to the teeth were heralded for their bravery today by Police Commissioner Kelly.

During a ceremony at One Police Plaza, Det. Kenneth Ayala, 49, was promoted to detective 2nd grade. He was credited with saving the lives of his colleagues on April 8 despite being wounded in the brazen shootout.

Ayala held up a 15-pound bullet proof Kevlar shield — called a bunker — as crazed suspect Nakwon Foxworth, 33, unleashed a dozen shots at them.

Wounded in the thigh and ankle Ayala was still able to empty his gun in the exchange of gunfire.

Also promoted was Emergency Service Unit colleagues Det. Michael Keenan, 52, to detective 1st grade. He was hit in the left calf.

Officer Michael Granahan, 35, was promoted to detective 3rd grade. He was also shot in the calf.

The three cops were among a team who had responded to an apartment in Sheepshead Bay on April 8 where gun crazed suspect Foxworth had barricaded himself with his pregnant girlfriend and their 4-month-old son.

Ayala recalled how it was top priority to get the mother and son to safety first

“She was coming through the door. Our aim was to get her, the pregnant girlfriend and her child through the door. As she was coming through the door and we were making room for her, she was barely clear of the threshold before he opened up fire. He started firing at us,” Ayala recalled.

In the gun battle, Foxworth was shot and wounded.

“There’s no formula, we go according to training. Everybody knows what your responsibilities are at any given position and whether you’re from one truck or another or one tour or another, we work together well and we stick to our training,” said Ayala. “And that’s what we did and it all worked out in our favor.”

“We train real hard and it all pays off in the long run like it did that night,” said Ayala who is still recuperating from his wounds.

Keenan added, “We’re a very small unit, a very tight unit. I think because we are a small unit, we are very tight. You know everybody in the unity is very tight. And I was close with Kenny before this but we’re very close today. “

Ayala, wearing an orthopedic boot on his foot, said of his buddy, Keenan, “The banter between us is constant and always flowing. A lot of kidding between the both of us.”

Foxworth’s violent tirade was triggered when movers had blocked the lobby entrance. The ex-con, who had a rap sheet for attempted murder, robbery and weapons possession, had an illegal arsenal in his sixth floor apartment, including a sawed off assault rifle.
