Brooklyn Rabbi Lavel Schwartz was sentenced yesterday to a year and a day in federal prison for his admitted role in a corruption and money-laundering scandal in New Jersey.
Schwartz, 61, one of more than 40 people arrested in connection with the case in July 2009, pleaded guilty in May to money-laundering conspiracy. Four other rabbis arrested in the sting already have pleaded guilty and have been sentenced.
Schwartz admitted laundering what he thought were illicit funds from a developer who was actually a government informant.
Several hundred thousand dollars were laundered through a charity.
About three-quarters of the defendants have pleaded guilty or been convicted.
